Soprano Sally Sanford is one of those rare musicians,
who is an award-winning performer, an internationally recognized
scholar in historical performance, and a gifted teacher both in
the classroom and the private studio. With her trio, Ensemble
Chanterelle, she won the Concert Artists Guild Award and made
her New York debut to critical acclaim.
She has appeared in recital, oratorio, staged medieval dramas,
baroque operas, and on radio and television in Germany, Holland,
Switzerland, Canada, and throughout the United States. A lyric
coloratura, Miss Sanford is noted for her passionate and engaging
performances of a wide repertoire, ranging from the 12th-20th
centuries, with particular emphasis on Monteverdi, Purcell, Lully,
Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert and their lesser known contemporaries.
A summa cum laude graduate of Yale, where she majored
in Literature and in Music, Miss Sanford holds a DMA degree from
Stanford University. She has studied voice with soprano (now conductor)
Susan Davenny Wyner and former Metropolitan Opera mezzo soprano
Herta Glaz.
A dynamic speaker and an outstanding master teacher, Miss Sanford
was the only American to lecture at the 2004 STIMU conference
on 18th-century singing in Utrecht, Holland. She has also given
lectures, lecture-recitals, master classes, and workshops at numerous
college and university campuses including Yale, Wesleyan, UCSB,
UC-Riverside, Cornell, UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Oregon.
She has been an Artist-in-Residence at Duke, UVA, University of
Southern Maine, Florida State, and UCLA, among others. She has
taught courses in music history and theory as well as studio voice
and has taught at Queens College-CUNY, Dartmouth, Deep Springs
College, The Hartt School of Music, and Wellesley College, where
she also directed the Wellesley College Collegium Musicum. As
a choral clinician, she has given many workshops for both amateur
and professional choral groups, including the New York Collegium,
and she works regularly with the Renaissance vocal ensemble Zephyrus.
Miss Sanford presently maintains studios in Concord,
Massachusetts and Charlottesville, Virginia. Her students include
young and established professional singers, as well as serious
amateur and choral singers. She also is active as a vocal coach
with particular emphasis on baroque styles, and she is currently
writing a book on singing.
