Sally Sanford currently maintains
teaching studios in New York City; Concord, Massachusetts; and
Charlottesville, Virginia. Her students generally range in age
from early 20's to mid-60's and include young and established
professionals as well as serious amateur and choral singers. She
teaches a wide variety of repertoire from the 12th to 21st centuries
and spanning all genres, including musical theater, opera, song
literature, oratorio, and chamber music.
Miss Sanford has been teaching voice for almost 30 years and
has evolved a unique approach to teaching singing, one that combines
a strong emphasis on the mind/body/spirit connection, enhancing
concentration and “centeredness” and reducing performance
anxiety, with a solid foundation in breath support and resonance.
She teaches a classic bel canto technique in an unorthodox way.
She also teaches a variety of practice techniques for efficient
learning in short blocks of time. The basic technique can usually
be learned in 6-12 months. Great artistry, however, is developed
over a lifetime.
As one of the leading specialists in the reconstruction of historical
vocal techniques with particular emphasis on the 17th & 18th
centuries, Miss Sanford also teaches historical techniques and
ornamentation and coaches medieval, Renaissance, baroque, classic
and early Romantic period styles.
